Design for Exports: Bringing in a Fresher Take on Philippine Design

Manila FAME returns this October, bringing with it a new season of authentic Philippine craftsmanship as the premier trade platform for export and design in the country. The Design and Lifestyle Event continues to purvey Philippine-made products that embody the solid merging of traditional and modern techniques, utilizing local materials with ingenious approaches to form, function, craftsmanship, and design.

For the October 2013 edition, Manila FAME presents new collections of products that go beyond the boundaries of innovation and Philippine aesthetics from the collaborations of select manufacturers and brands and with seasoned and up-and-coming designers under the Design for Exports Program of the Center for International Trade Expositions and Missions (CITEM), the Department of Trade and Industry’s export marketing arm and force behind Manila FAME.

The Design for Exports Program anchors itself in working with the country’s manufacturers in developing high-caliber products that exude the Philippine design identity of mixing the impeccable tradition of craftsmanship with modern aesthetics that caters to global demand. The program aims to nurture and promote Philippine manufacturers with the aid of the some of the best design professionals in the country. With the expertise and experience of designers backing these manufacturers and producers, the country continues to be a source for the best products in furniture, home décor, fashion, and holiday and gifts.

In a special setting of the Design Philippines, design icon Budji Layug provides decades of expertise and inspiration to a roster of Philippine manufacturers to develop top-of-the-line and design-forward products in furniture and home décor. “I’m trying to bring them to a new stage of exposure, of branding, and fresh ideas to how they can open up and offer their services, their products to a bigger market,” says Layug on working with the companies. “I think by giving my thoughts and sharing my experience with them they are able to open up and understand better the direction that they need to go for the future.”

The designer also leads a group of designers fresh to the Manila FAME scene, all designing and developing products with manufacturers under the Red Box Program of the Design for Exports. To Layug, working with these designers is both challenging and satisfying. “I am able to share my experiences with the designers as to how to understand better the whole picture of Philippine design and manufacturing,” says Layug. “I think it’s going to open up new levels of exposure and imagination for each and every one.”

Long-time creative collaborators to Manila FAME, designers Jinggoy Buensuceso and Wataru Sakuma lend their experience and expertise to the program as well. The two designers work with manufacturers to develop innovative, high-quality products in home décor, gifts and premium items, and Christmas and holiday décor.
