DTI-CITEM assembles Philippine delegation to highlight the country’s best food exports at one of the leading food shows in Asia

After the successful turnout of IFEX Philippines NXTFOOD ASIA last month, the Center for International Trade Expositions and Missions (CITEM) now sets its sights on the Taipei International Food Show (TIFS) this coming 19-22 June 2019 at the Taipei Nangang Exhibition Center and the Taipei World Trade Center (TWTC). As the Department of Trade and Industry’s (DTI) export promotion arm, CITEM will be managing the Philippine delegation at this year’s TIFS. The Philippine Pavilion will be located at the ground floor of the TWTC Hall 1.
More commonly known as FOOD TAIPEI, this year’s TIFS will also be held concurrently with four other food-related shows (Foodtech & Pharmatech Taipei, Taipei Pack, Taiwan HORECA and Halal Taiwan). This 5-in-1 food show provides visitors and exhibitors a one-stop shop to engage companies, brands and suppliers from all facets and related sectors of the food industry.
For this edition, the Philippine delegation will be bringing with it both returning and first-time exhibitors to Taiwan which will all be united under the theme FoodPhilippines. The theme’s goal is to highlight the natural and healthy food products of the Philippines while putting a special focus on the country’s premium tropical fruits (e.g., banana, mango, pineapple, calamansi), coconut products (e.g., VCO, coco water, coco powder, desiccated coconut), natural sauces & condiments and ready-to-eat processed foods & beverages.
Some companies returning to FOOD TAIPEI this year are Destileria Limtuaco, Year Luck, and Century Pacific Food. Joining them are TIFS newcomers like GAINCOCO, Leonie Agri Corp. and JND Manufacturing Industries. Many of these exhibitors will be going to Taiwan with the goal of raising their brand awareness, promoting their new product lines and exploring the Taiwanese market in the hopes of landing foreign clients not only in Taiwan, but also in mainland China.
Last year’s Philippine participation in FOOD TAIPEI generated US$25.83 million in sales from 18 participants. For the 2019 edition, DTI-CITEM is planning to reach a sales target of US$26 million along with an increase in the number of business inquiries. DTI, IFAD champions MSMEs, farmers through a P4.7-billion peso, agri-enterprise development project launched at IFEX Philippines NXTFOOD ASIA.
Farmers and micro-, small- and medium-enterprises (MSMEs) in the Philippines can expect more marketing and business support from the government with the launch of the Rural Agro-enterprise Partnership for Inclusive Development and Growth (RAPID Growth) project.
RAPID Growth is a 4.7-billion-peso value chain-based and market-driven business development initiative that aims to achieve inclusive and sustainable economic development for rural farming communities in the country. It is spearheaded by the Department of Trade and Industry (DTI) and funded by the International Fund for Agricultural Development (IFAD).
Led by DTI Secretary Ramon Lopez, RAPID Growth project was kicked off in the first day of IFEX Philippines NXTFOOD ASIA on May 24 at the World Trade Center Metro Manila, Pasay City.
“RAPID Growth project goes to the heart of what we are doing at DTI: linking farmers and businesses,” said Lopez. “And by promoting the microenterprises or those in the bottom of the pyramid, we are empowering the nation.”
“IFEX Philippines NXTFOOD ASIA is an excellent platform to present this momentous project due to the presence of local and international food companies which can be potential partners and forward linkages to the export market in the agricultural value chains to be developed,” said Lopez.
Through RAPID Growth project, Lopez said that DTI is looking to address rural poverty and unemployment by building partnership between MSMEs and farming communities to produce products that are competitive and enjoy a high demand in the global market.
Held at the launch was the signing of the pledge of commitment by the Project Steering Committee for RAPID Growth project composed of leaders and representatives from the government, agricultural, trade, finance and private sectors.
IFAD Country Director Alessandro Marini said poor families from local communities now have a better chance to increase their income level, improve their social status and participate in the global value chain since RAPID Growth makes the agri-enterprise ecosystem “more inclusive and competitive.”
According to Lopez, RAPID Growth project is different from all other agri-based development programs since it focuses on a market-driven approach where the MSMEs are the entry point to develop the value chain from agricultural production side to processing, distribution and marketing.
The country’s trade chief also emphasized that RAPID Growth project will link local farmers, MSMEs and corporations thru Negosyo Centers and other market interventions to ensure their access to raw materials, markets, technology and suitable investment finance.
“Increasing the production of our small farmers will helped them grow alongside our burgeoning manufacturing sector, prepare them for the global market and provide much-needed boost to our MSMEs in the food business,” he explained.
Elevating PH’s agri priority sectors: coffee, cacao, coco coir and processed fruits and nuts
RAPID Growth project is sets to target small farmers and micro-entrepreneurs engaged within the selected commodity chains, further targeting unemployed and underemployed rural women and men. Special focus will be on women, youth and indigenous people.
According to DTI Secretary Ramon Lopez, RAPID Growth will primarily target four agricultural value chains, namely cocoa, coffee, processed fruits and nuts, and coconut.
“These four commodities have lucrative markets, social features and have the potential to provide sustained economic benefits to small farmers and enterprises,” Lopez said.
It is set to be initially implemented in six regions, which are regions eight to 13 with 20 target provinces. This includes Leyte, Southern Leyte and Northern Samar from Region 8; Zamboanga del Norte, Zamboanga del Sur and Zamboanga Sibugay from Region 9; Bukidnon, Lanao del Norte and Misamis Oriental from Region 10; Compostela Valley, Davao del Sur, Davao del Norte and Davao Oriental from Region 11; North Cotabato, Sarangani, Sultan Kudarat and Maguindanao from Region 12 or ARMM; and Agusan del Norte, Agusan del Sur and Surigao del Sur from Region 13.
Five components in transforming PH agri-enterprises
Under the RAPID Growth project, five levels of interventions will be implemented to ensure the holistic development of farmer and MSME beneficiaries, namely:
Direct Assistance to Enterprises -To strengthen complementary activities necessary to boost investments along the four commodity value chains. This includes the provision of conditional matching grants and partnership/coordination for the rehabilitation of farm-to-market roads to improve the connectivity of production areas in intended markets.
Institutional Strengthening – To intensify the promotion of MSMEs and farmer in the four commodity value chains. The interventions include the establishment of provincial networks of Negosyo Centers to also serve as one-stop-shops; development of MEs and cooperatives as service hubs to provide basic services to farmers; facilitation of inclusive and equitable partnerships between farmers and SMEs; and, capacity building of LGUs on the supervision of FMR rehabilitation.
Technical Assistance to Financial Service Providers (FSPs) – To provide capacity building to companies that provide accessible financial products and services. This includes consultancy for FSPs, capacity building for cooperatives and support to Agricultural Guarantee Fund Pool (AGFP) and Philippine Crop Insurance Corporation (PCIC), among others.
Innovation Fund – To provide incentives to private equity and venture capital firms to finance SME capital requirements. This will include innovative financial instruments as an alternative to simple loan products and develop non-loan products and services, among others.
Management, Monitoring and Evaluation – To implement an approach that will feature public-private partnerships, embedding project management in DTI and building capacities of public and private partners, among others.
The RAPID Growth Project was proposed to directly address policy commitments of the Philippine Government aligned with the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) that are of high relevance in eliminating poverty and reducing inequality.
Anchored in the government’s ‘Pagbabago’ pillar, this project seeks to address the Philippine Development Plan 2017-2022 target outcomes which are (1) expanding economic opportunities and (2) increasing access to economic opportunities including smallholder farmers and fisherfolks.
Likewise, through this project, the DTI is set to prioritize the micro, small, and medium enterprises (MSMEs) as the key pillar of its economic program. This approach will facilitate collaboration among public agencies in supporting agriculture-based enterprises and synergies among stakeholders. DTI’s capacity to broker cross-sectoral synergies and partnerships will be upgraded at national, regional and provincial levels.
The project is funded by IFAD through a combination of Loan and Grant; Government of the Philippines (GoP); Local Government Units (LGUs); Financial Service Providers (FSP).

The 13th edition of the IFEX Philippines opens this weekend with a slew of food-tasting and knowledge-sharing activities.
MANILA, Philippines – The biggest international food fair in the country opens its doors this May 24-26 to welcome local and foreign trade buyers and food enthusiasts at the World Trade Center Metro Manila (WTCMM). Featuring the Premium 7 (coffee, cacao, coconut, mango, banana, pineapple, tuna) and Rising Stars (heirloom rice, calamansi, ube, pili nut, turmeric, malunggay, muscovado sugar, tamarind, dalandan) in the Philippine food export industry, IFEX Philippines is set to delight visitors with its various components and special settings designed to highlight and showcase Philippine food, ingredients and cuisine.
Organized by the Department of Trade and Industry (DTI) through the Center for International Trade Expositions and Missions (CITEM), IFEX Philippines NXTFOOD ASIA brings the latest in the Philippine food scene to the tradeshow floor.
Along with more than 600 exhibitors and three full days of various food-tasting activities, IFEX Philippines will also host a slew of food export seminars featuring tracks on agri-investment and foreign market entry requirements.
These free seminars will be conducted by industry experts and leading practitioners to share their insights on the latest trends, innovations and best practices in the food exporting and servicing sector.
Knowledge sharing sessions
Day one of the food fair will start things off with the Agribusiness Investment Forum by the Department of Agriculture’s Agribusiness and Marketing Assistance Service (DA-AMAS). This forum will include tracks on pig husbandry, goat production and natural farming. Together with these agri-investment forums, day one will also feature Market Entry Requirement Tracks for the UK and Chinese markets, as well as a talk on market value-adding concepts.
The second day of the show will feature another round of Agri-investment Forums covering aquaculture, agri-technologies, high-value crops and cacao production. In addition, IFEX will also be hosting an exciting forum focused on The Business of Cacao with panelists from the Philippine and European cacao industries. There will be another market entry requirement track that will discuss Australia’s Food Regulatory System and Export Requirements. To cap off the second day of seminars, there will be a track discussing how entrepreneurs can properly handle and manage their intellectual property rights.

IFEX Philippines NXTFOOD ASIA presents the next big thing in Filipino food at Islands on a Plate
Manila, Philippines ‐‐ This year, Filipino food and chefs have been getting rave reviews and international recognition for their culinary technique, creativity and usage of local ingredients.
National Geographic has listed Filipino food as one of the top food trends in 2019 with the food rave on Filipino-led eateries across the globe such as Washington DC’s Bad Saint and LA’s Lasa, Mamasons’ in London, as well as Filishack, The Adobros and Mamasons’ in London.
Filipino-American chef Tom Cunanan of Bad Saint finally won as the Best Chef: Mid-Atlantic at the James Beard Awards, which is considered the “Oscars” of the culinary world.
Meanwhile, Toyo Eatery, led by Filipino culinary star Jordy Navarra, has recently entered the list of prestigious Asia’s 50 Best Restaurants 2019 as the only Philippine entry at rank 43.
As the world craves for Filipino cuisine, it begs a question: what is next for Philippine food?
“The next step for Filipino food is to channel all of its culinary technique, wealth of ingredients and traditions from a global sensation to actually become a mainstream staple on dining menus all over the world,” shared Pauline Suaco-Juan, the executive director of the Center for International Trade Expositions and Missions (CITEM).
CITEM is the export promotion arm of the Department of Trade and Industry (DTI) and the agency that is mandated to promote Philippine food in different international exhibits in UAE, US, Germany, Japan, Taiwan, China and many more.
“The complexities and diverse flavors of our homegrown dishes are now being unraveled to the global audience thanks to the brilliance of Filipino chefs and restaurants abroad with their refined culinary techniques and choice of quality Asian ingredients, as well as the Philippine food exhibits overseas,” Suaco‐Juan said.
“Now is an exciting time for Philippine food. Our local cuisine is rising in the world of food and we want to push for Filipino food products, dishes and ingredients to become the next big Asian trend,” she added.
This statement comes a day before CITEM opens its gate to thousands of local and international food buyers and culinary influencers to check out what’s the next big thing in Asian food in IFEX Philippines NXTFOOD ASIA at the World Trade Center Metro Manila (WTCMM), Pasay City from May 24‐26, 2019.
According to Suaco-Juan, IFEX Philippines NXTFOOD Asia seeks to answer the question “What’s NXT in the world of FOOD?” by giving exhibitors from the Philippines and beyond a platform to showcase premium food exports, emerging trends, best practices, and industry innovations to the world’s biggest buyers.
A highlight of the event is the showcase of the country’s “Premium 7” export products, namely banana, coconut, coffee, cacao, mango, pineapple and tuna. Foodies attending the event can also relish dishes or products made with the “Rising Stars of Filipino food,” which include ube, calamansi, turmeric (luyang dilaw), moringa (malunggay), muscovado rice and heirloom rice, among others.

Islands on a Plate celebrates Philippine food
As the country’s biggest export-oriented food show, IFEX Philippines NXTFOOD ASIA is taking foodies all over the world in a gastronomic feast of Filipino flavors in the Islands on a Plate special setting.
This special setting will feature the heirloom cuisines and iconic food products from Luzon, Visayas and Mindanao with the inclusion of a Halal Pavilion, One Town One Product (OTOP) Pavilion and a Seafood Pavilion by the Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources (BFAR).
It shall also have a special pavilion for food producers hailing from Central Luzon, CALABARZON, Central Visayas, Eastern Visayas, Northern Mindanao, Davao Region and SOCCSKSARGEN, as well as the provinces of Negros Occidental, Misamis Oriental and Taguig City.
“Foodies will be able to taste and get an intimate knowledge on the roots of the country’s most popular dishes and delicacies across the regions straight from the some of the same culinary minds who have made those iconic and part of Filipino culinary tradition,” explained Suaco-Juan.
To highlight the use of the Philippines’ Premium 7 and the Rising Star of Filipino food, CITEM invited selected members of the media in an exclusive 12-course merienda cena dining experience presented with Via Mare and Chef Bea Nitard ingredients.
Included in the lineup of dishes were rustic bibingka, pirurutong bumbong, open-faced mango and premium red tuna salad, calamansi sherbet with pomelo bits; Cebuanong alimasag ala brandade gratinee; Batangas turmeric rice with chicken inasal; taba ng talangka with roasted kinurat rice; and champoradong waray with danggit. Also served for desserts were crème emperatrice, turon with chocolate and caramel filling, tropical fruit cake flambe and spicy chocolate ginger bombs.

More than 2,000 international and local buyers have already signed up for the event to check out the latest export products and services of around 650 food exhibitors in the country’s biggest food event.
Two hundred two million dollars or more than 10.5 billion pesos worth of export and domestic sales are expected to be generated by around 657 local and international food exhibitors in the upcoming 13th edition of IFEX Philippines on May 24-26, 2019 at the World Trade Center Metro Manila (WTCMM) and the Philippine Trade Training Center (PTTC).
This is the working target of its organizer, the Center for International Trade Expositions and Missions (CITEM), the export promotion arm of the Department of Trade and Industry (DTI).
“Excitement is mounting for the newly rebranded IFEX Philippines NXTFOOD ASIA with all its fresh show features and special activities for trade buyers and visitors coming from different parts of the globe,” said DTI-CITEM Executive Director Pauline Suaco-Juan.
“We expect this escalating level of interest and enthusiasm will translate to a higher sales turnout for our international and local exhibitors,” she added.
Presenting ‘NXTFOOD ASIA,’ this year’s edition will showcase Asian food featuring the latest food innovations, trends and best practices in the industry with the participation of Asian food manufacturers, experts, culinary masters, enthusiasts and other stakeholders in the food world.
Featured in the three day event are Asian and Philippine food products from 10 food sectors, namely: (1) Alcoholic and Non-Alcoholic Beverages; (2) Coffee, Herbal teas, and Cocoa; (3) Fresh and Processed Seafood; (4) Fruits and Vegetables; (5) Grains, Cereals, and Commodities; (6) Herbs and Spices; (7) Meat and Poultry; (8) Natural, Healthy, and Organic Products; (9) Specialty, Ethnic, and Gourmet Products; and (10) Food Processing Equipment, Packaging Materials, Refrigeration, and Storage.
Organized by DTI-CITEM, IFEX Philippines NXTFOOD ASIA is the country’s biggest and most respected business-to-business (B2B) event for Asian food and ingredients. It is co-organized with the Micro, Small and Medium Enterprise Development (MSMED) Council, the Department of Agriculture (DA) and the Philippine Exporters Confederation, Inc. (PHILEXPORT).

The top 10 buyer country of origin of international buyers in the upcoming event are from the USA, UAE, China, Japan, Australia, Canada, Singapore, Malaysia, South Korea and Qatar.
“We have strengthened our event marketing and Very Important Buyer (VIB) program to attract international buyers who include international and local retailers, wholesalers, specialty store owners, importers, buying agents, hotelier or restaurateurs,” noted Suaco-Juan.
“We are also expecting big buyer delegations to check out the latest offering of Philippine and Asian food in IFEX Philippines such as the chocolate buying missions from Belgium and San Francisco, Shanghai firms as well as the group from Guangdong International Food Association,” she added.

DTI-CITEM opened its ‘IFEX Connect’ program, a customized platform for integrated business-to-business (B2B) matching services to help buyers identify and screen potential business partners among the exhibitors in collaboration with DTI’s Export Marketing Bureau (EMB).
According to Suaco-Juan, exhibitors and buyers can take advantage of the G-Mart Private Label Matching Program at IFEX Connect. IFEX Very Important Buyers (VIBs) are also expected to hold pre-arranged business-to-business meetings through this venue.
IFEX Philippines 2018 performance
In the previous edition of IFEX Philippines, DTI-CITEM surpassed its targets with over USD 256 million worth of export and domestic sales from 513 international and local exhibitors.
Among the 10 product sectors in the event, natural and organic products emerged as the best-selling category, which generated USD 29.9 million worth of sales. It was followed by fine food and specialties at USD 29M; fresh and processed fruits and vegetables at USD 22.6M; grains and cereals at USD 12.9M; and beverages at USD 8.55M.
DTI-CITEM will showcase top quality seafood at The Cold Room special setting of the country’s biggest international food trade show.
MANILA, Philippines – The Philippine archipelago is home to one of the richest and most diverse aquatic ecosystems in the world. It is through this that the country enjoys an abundance of commercial and domesticated fish, crustaceans and mollusks. These are distributed from major fish ports to all over the country and exported to nations like Europe and the USA, with tuna being the largest fishery export from the Philippines followed by seaweed, shrimp and crab products.
The fishing industry is a significant sector in the Philippines, contributing around 2% of the country’s GDP. The Department of Trade and Industry (DTI), through the Center for International Trade Expositions and Missions (CITEM), aims to showcase what the Philippine seas have to offer in the global market at the upcoming IFEX Philippines NXTFOOD ASIA on 24-26 May 2019 at the World Trade Center Metro Manila.
One of the new event features that will be unveiled this edition is The Cold Room: Seafood at Sub-Zero. This curated setting will feature the best export quality seafood from the country’s top and rising seafood exporters. To preserve the freshness of these marine products, the whole special setting will be housed in a specially designed cold storage facility custom-built by Cold Front Technologies Asia, Inc.
Trade buyers and visitors are invited to enter The Cold Room and experience temperatures below zero to see and taste the various selections of fresh, frozen and value-added Philippine seafood like tuna, seaweed, prawns, octopus and other high-value marine food products.
One of the companies to be featured in The Cold Room is first-time exhibitor, ASMAROS Global Corp., whose main products are authentic unagi kabayaki and frozen unagi fillet. The company operates the only eel farm in Asia, outside of Japan, that is certified by the Japan Agricultural Standard (JAS). ASMAROS highlights its use of Japanese systems and technologies in producing top quality unagi kabayaki sourced from Philippine seas.
Returning this year as part of this new special setting are Donny’s Choice Fresh Seafood and Century Pacific Food, Inc. Donny’s Choice specializes in fresh frozen marine products like their peeled shrimps, nobashi prawns and lapu-lapu fillets. This year’s IFEX Philippines will also witness the debut of their newly-designed product packaging.
For this edition, Century Pacific will be featuring their fresh frozen bangus products sourced directly from open sea cages from the province of General Santos. The International Food Exhibition (IFEX) Philippines, Asia’s food lifestyle and innovation show, features halal-certified food products as it celebrates its 10th edition.
The global halal trade is estimated to be worth USD2.3 trillion. While halal food products have a ready market among the world’s Muslim population estimated at around 2 billion, halal food is consumed by even non-Muslim consumers because it has become synonymous with the highest standards of food safety.
The increasing demand for halal-certified products in the international market poses a huge opportunity for the ASEAN community. While the neighboring ASEAN member states undertake efforts to promote and develop their halal industries, the Philippines likewise takes advantage of this advancement by carrying on development programs for the industry through the Department of Trade and Industry (DTI). The Philippine Export Development Plan (PEDP) identifies halal food exports as one of the growth areas that could trigger a 30 percent increase in the export figures for food by 2016.
“The Center for International Trade Expositions and Missions (CITEM) has always been an active agency in promoting the halal food industry. As a key player in bringing food exhibitors in the international scene, CITEM brings these companies to the world’s biggest food shows annually, helping them gain traction from halal trade buyers all around the globe,” said Rosvi Gaetos, Executive Director of CITEM.
In the recently held Gulfood, the world’s biggest annual food and hospitality show, a group of select halal-certified food companies representing Food Philippines generated USD90 million in sales in a span of five days.
Organized by CITEM, the export promotions arm of DTI, IFEX Philippines will feature 51 food companies with halal certifications in its 10th edition. The event’s largest buyer delegation will come from the MENASA region and will include top retail chain operators.
A full line-up of seminars on halal trade will take place on 23 May 2015 from 10:00 AM to 5:00 PM, under the IFEX Philippines Food Export and Investment Seminars. Seminars under the halal track will focus on the new market entry and halal as competitive advantage, halal concerns and awareness on various products, incorporating shar’ah aspect in business, how to establish halal business, halal transport, restaurants, and catering services, and introduction to Muslim-friendly tourism.
IFEX Philippines is a biennial trade event organized by CITEM and supported by the Department of Agriculture – Agribusiness Marketing Assistance Service (DA-AMAS). An official parallel activity to the APEC Ministers Responsible for Trade (MRT) Meeting, IFEX Philippines 2015 is slated on May 21-24, 2015, at the SMX Convention Center, Mall of Asia Complex, Pasay City, Philippines.
