PH exhibitors generate US$389.74M of export sales in China Expo

  • Local MSMEs from the Philippines’ food sector prove successful after its return to China’s premier import expo.

Philippine food exhibitors booked around US$390 million in export sales in the 2nd China International Import Expo (CIIE) held at the National Exhibition and Convention Center (NECC) in Shanghai, China, last 5-10 November 2019. This is more than three times the amount of what the Philippines registered from its 2018 participation which was at US$124 million.

Led by DTI Secretary Ramon M. Lopez, the 32 participating exhibitors that made up the 139-strong delegation for the 2019 CIIE was organized by the Department of Trade and Industry (DTI) through the Center for International Expositions and Missions (CITEM) in partnership with the Department of Agriculture (DA), the Export Marketing Bureau (EMB) and the Philippine Trade and Investment Centers (PTIC) in Shanghai, Beijing and Guangzhou.

“The big jump in sales since the last CIIE proves that China sees the Philippines as a significant source of agricultural products,” said DTI Secretary Ramon M. Lopez. “Suppliers should increase their production to better meet the demands of the Chinese market,” added Lopez given the improved performance of this year’s delegation.

To supplement the promotion of the Philippines’ well-received food exports, Chef Bea Nitard of the Via Mare Group held live cooking demos and food-sampling activities to help draw in even more tradeshow goers to the FoodPhilippines Pavilion. Chef Nitard developed dishes and desserts highlighting Filipino ingredients through different applications, adapting each dish to Asian and Chinese tastes. Through these activities, it was observed that Chinese consumers do not shy away from trying new flavors and cooking styles. This observation opens up new avenues and possibilities for Filipino food exporters and chefs to explore.

“Through this participation, we shall continue to improve the bilateral trade relations between the Philippines and China as we forge stronger bonds with China and the rest of the world,” said DTI Undersecretary Abdulgani Macatoman during the opening of the FoodPhilippines Pavilion.

Undersecretary Macatoman also noted the presence of halal foods featured by 19 of the 32 exhibitors as the Philippines’ response to the rapid growth of the health and wellness sector in the global market. “Through these efforts to further promote healthier consumer foods and beverages, the Philippines aims to solidify its place as a key player in this growing sector,” he adds.

The Philippine Pavilion received an estimated number of 6,000 buyers and visitors during the 6-day event. The best-selling Philippine products at the expo were fresh bananas, pineapples, mangoes and durian. These were followed by processed fruits & nuts and other coconut-based products.

With the positive reception and results from this year’s Philippine exhibitors, both the DTI and the DA are expecting a much bigger participation in the 2020 edition of CIIE.

PH spotlights GenSan as ‘City of Charm’ at CAEXPO 2019

General Santos City to be showcased as PH’s next Southern Metropolis in China’s 2nd biggest expo.

Positioned to be the next metropolis in Southern Philippines, General Santos City is set to showcase its trade and economic opportunities as the country’s “City of Charm” in the 16th China-ASEAN Expo (CAEXPO) in Nanning, Guangxi, China, on September 20-23, 2019.

The local government of General Santos City, also known as GenSan, seeks to highlight their city’s booming agricultural and manufacturing sectors, emerging infrastructure projects, multi-faceted eco-tourism sectors and other promising investment opportunities under the Philippines’ National Pavilion in their second participation in CAEXPO.

“Marking our comeback in CAEXPO is a bigger showcase of the exciting developments and prospects in GenSan which is on the way to become the country’s first Green City and the next southern metropolis,” said General Santos City Mayor Ronnel Rivera.

“We also want to champion our reputation as the undisputed Tuna Capital of the Philippines and fastest-growing city in South-Central Mindanao,” he said. “We hope that this participation will enable our city to attract more foreign investments and provide the much-needed boost to our growing industries that will lead to more local livelihood opportunities.”

Rivera also noted that GenSan is shaping to become a transshipment hub in the Pacific that can host major facilities of a feeder seaport, an international airport, the country’s second largest fish port, and now on its aerotropolis development for its strategic location in the Brunei-Indonesia-Malaysia-Philippines East ASEAN Growth Area (BIMP-EAGA).

According to Abdulgani Macatoman, DTI Undersecretary for Trade Promotions Group (TPG), the strategic proximity to the BIMP-EAGA and its agricultural abundance strengthen its position as one of the halal-friendly cities in the Philippines.

“We also want to highlight GenSan as a premier source of halal-certified products and a viable destination for neighboring Muslim countries in this exhibit in China and other Southeast Asian countries,” said Macatoman.

The city was also recently chosen by the Asian Development Bank (ADB) to be the Philippines’ pioneer city under its Green City Initiative (GCI) to make it an eco-friendly and livable city through sustainable facilities and infrastructure projects.

CAEXPO is one of the biggest trade events in China with a 124,000-square meter exhibition space—the only international trade fair in the region dedicated to promoting the building of China-ASEAN Free Trade Area (CAFTA) and celebrating regional trade cooperation. Last year, the four-day event was participated in by more than 2,700 exhibitors and 96,000 buyers and visitors from all over the world.

Led by the Department of Trade and Industry-Center for International Trade and Expositions and Missions (DTI-CITEM), GenSan is part of the Philippine delegation in CAEXPO composed of local companies, investment promotion agencies (IPAs) and other government offices.

Agriculture and Manufacturing Powerhouse

Agriculture and manufacturing are the key sectors in General Santos City’s rise as one of the epicenters for economic growth in Mindanao.

GenSan takes pride in its sashimi-grade tuna industry as it caught and handled 247,637.20 metric tons of tuna on its fishing port complex in 2018.

The city also holds the world’s largest fish display made up of more than 25,594 kilos of yellowfin tuna in 2014.

“More than 85 percent of total fish landings are yellowfin tuna and other tuna species. Seven of the country’s nine tuna canning plants operate in this southern port city where more than 80 percent of the tuna landings are canned and processed for export,” said Rivera.

Aside from tuna, GenSan is also a major exporter of pineapple, coconut, banana, palm oil, salmon, shrimp, and other seafood and tropical products. The city has also been the preferred destination and gateway of agricultural products in Mindanao, the “Food Basket of the Philippines.”

International Trade and Logistics Hub

Envisioned as the next metropolitan city of the south, GenSan is shaping to be a trade and logistics powerhouse in the international market with its ongoing infrastructure projects under the government’s “Build, Build, Build” program and its long-term development plan to become the Philippines’ first sustainable city under ADB’s Green City Initiative.

Among its trade and logistics initiatives is the establishment of General Santos City Airport Industrial Complex or Aerotropolis which will position Region 12 as a major international gateway in Mindanao.

Also being expanded is GenSan’s seaport, Makar Wharf, to become one of the biggest ports and transshipment hub in the Philippines. GenSan has also recently unveiled a 25-megawatt (MW) solar power plant—the first in the city and considered as one of the biggest in Mindanao.

Vibrant Eco-tourism Destination

“As a city by the bay, GenSan is a watersports and aquatic haven. Tourists can ride through the waves of Sarangani Bay through jetskis, banana boats, paddleboards, skimboards and kayak or swim leisurely,” said Rivera. “They can also take their time to appreciate the wonders of the waters with a pair of goggle and snorkel or a scuba diving gear.”

These activities can be tried out at the city’s Queen Tuna Park and beaches in London, Tropicana and coastal areas along the GenSan Fish Port.

The people of Gensan are also no stranger to merrymaking and cultural celebration as its schedule is packed with colorful festivities all year round. This includes the “Isda-Isdaan Festival” in January, “Kalilangan sa GenSan” in February, Metro GenSan Week in June, and Tuna Festival and National Tourism Week in September, among others.

GenSan is visited by 400,000 to 500,000 local and international tourists every quarter as a gateway to the Philippines’ Region 12 or SOCCSKSARGEN.

From 2016 to 2018, the city also emerged as the top venue for conferences and conventions outside of Metro Manila. It hosted a total of 900 local, regional, national and international gatherings in 2016, 920 in 2017 and 970 from January to November 2018, according to a news report.

“We want to sustain GenSan’s momentum by following up their previous participation in CAEXPO last 2016 wherein they were able to meet around 15 interested investors for the joint venture, including a collaboration on the development of the airport and other infrastructure,” said CITEM Executive Director Pauline Suaco-Juan.

The Philippine participation in CAEXPO is led by DTI-CITEM in partnership with the Local Government of General Santos City, Philippine Trade and Investment Centers (PTIC) in Guangzhou, Beijing and Shanghai, DTI – Export Marketing Bureau (EMB), DTI – Region XI, Foreign Trade Service Corps. (FTSC), Board of Investments (BOI), the Tourism Promotions Board (TPB) and other investment promotion agencies (IPAs).

 

Philippine premium food exports set to delight visitors at Taipei International Food Show

After the successful turnout of IFEX Philippines NXTFOOD ASIA last month, the Center for International Trade Expositions and Missions (CITEM) now sets its sights on the Taipei International Food Show (TIFS) this coming 19-22 June 2019 at the Taipei Nangang Exhibition Center and the Taipei World Trade Center (TWTC). As the Department of Trade and Industry’s (DTI) export promotion arm, CITEM will be managing the Philippine delegation at this year’s TIFS. The Philippine Pavilion will be located at the ground floor of the TWTC Hall 1.

More commonly known as FOOD TAIPEI, this year’s TIFS will also be held concurrently with four other food-related shows (Foodtech & Pharmatech Taipei, Taipei Pack, Taiwan HORECA and Halal Taiwan). MANILA, Philippines – The biggest international food fair in the country opens its doors this May 24-26 to welcome local and foreign trade buyers and food enthusiasts at the World Trade Center Metro Manila (WTCMM). Featuring the Premium 7 (coffee, cacao, coconut, mango, banana, pineapple, tuna) and Rising Stars (heirloom rice, calamansi, ube, pili nut, turmeric, malunggay, muscovado sugar, tamarind, dalandan) in the Philippine food export industry, IFEX Philippines is set to delight visitors with its various components and special settings designed to highlight and showcase Philippine food, ingredients and cuisine.

Organized by the Department of Trade and Industry (DTI) through the Center for International Trade Expositions and Missions (CITEM), IFEX Philippines NXTFOOD ASIA brings the latest in the Philippine food scene to the tradeshow floor.

Food traders and enthusiasts around world are invited to source the finest Asian food and ingredients in the Philippines as the country’s food and agricultural product exports continuous to expand.

The Philippine Department of Trade and Industry, through the Center for International Trade Expositions and Missions (DTI-CITEM), said global buyers could discover the next big thing in Asian food in the International Food Exhibition (IFEX) Philippines at the World Trade Center Metro Manila (WTCMM) on May 24-26, 2019.

Now on its 13th edition, the three-day event will present ‘NXTFOOD ASIA’ featuring the innovations, trends and best practices in the food industry with the participation of Philippine and Asian food champions, manufacturers, culinary talents and other stakeholders.

“The Philippines is your gateway to Asian food products with its vibrant agri-export and food manufacturing industry, as well as its strong oriental influence and strategic proximity to other Asian countries,” said DTI-CITEM Executive Director Pauline Suaco-Juan.

“Food buyers and lovers can savor these Asian products and other tropical delights with the showcase of ‘NXTFOOD ASIA’ in IFEX Philippines, the country’s biggest and most respected business-to-business (B2B) event for Asian food and ingredients,” she added.

PH agri-exports boom

In 2017, the Philippines’ export earnings from agricultural products reached a total of Php 331.61 billion with fresh banana as the country’s leading agricultural export commodity according to the Philippine Statistics Authority (PSA). This number was higher by 32.25 percent from the 2016 record of Php 250.75 billion.

The country has recently reclaimed its position as the second-largest exporter of bananas in the world based on a preliminary market review report of the United Nations’ Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO).

FAO estimated that Philippine banana exports last year expanded by 77.34 percent to an all-time high of 2.95 million metric tons from a recorded volume of 1.663 MMT in 2017.

The output recovery of the Philippines, which accounts for about 90 percent of the total Asian banana exports, boosted the region’s shipments by 70 percent in 2018 to 3.2 MMT from 1.9 MMT in 2017, according to FAO.

Meanwhile, the same PSA report showed the volume of centrifugal sugar exports at 440,733 metric tons indicating a 142.48 percent increment in 2017. Its exports value went up to Php 10.26 billion by 118.14 percent and contributed 3.09 percent to the total value of agricultural exports.

The volume of fresh mango exports at 16,166 metric tons and value at Php 1.17 billion also went up by 12.36 percent and 84.56 percent, respectively, with a notable increase in market price.

“Increasing exportation both in volume and value were noted for onion, mongo, cocoa beans, sweet potato, cassava, papaya and calamansi,” said Suaco-Juan. “There’s also a huge market interest for the other agri-commodities like santol, kamias, jackfruit, dalandan, passion fruit and other rootcrops and exotic Philippine fruits.”

PSA report also revealed that the value of rice exports in 2017 at Php 44.61 million grew by 114.85 percent. Its corresponding volume went up to 322.0 metric tons or by 22.30 percent. Exportation of corn in 2017 at 595.5 metric tons valued at Php 84.11 million also increased by 71.66 percent and by 65.32 percent, respectively.

In the world export market, the Philippines has a bigger share in the export earnings generated from coconut products. In 2016, the contribution of the Philippines’ export value of desiccated coconut to the world export earnings increased to 31.07 percent.  Increasing shares were noted as well in pineapple at 24.99 percent and banana at 5.77 percent.

Discover it in the upcoming 13th edition of the International Food Exhibition (IFEX) Philippines at the World Trade Center Metro Manila (WTCMM) on May 24-26, 2019.

Presenting ‘NXTFOOD ASIA,’ this year’s edition will showcase Asian food featuring the latest food innovations, trends and best practices in the food industry with the participation of Asian food manufacturers, experts, culinary masters, enthusiasts and other stakeholders in the food world.

IFEX Philippines is the country’s biggest and most respected business-to-business (B2B) event for Asian food and ingredients organized by the Philippines’ Department of Trade and Industry through the Center for International Trade Expositions and Missions (DTI-CITEM).

“See, taste and experience the next big thing in the future of food in the Philippines and other countries as we serve you the flavorful selections that emanate from our deeply rooted Asian culinary tradition and heritage,” said DTI-CITEM Executive Director Pauline Suaco-Juan.

“Be part of this gastronomic celebration to discover the finest food and ingredients, iconic culinary fusions, home-grown delicacies and latest food trends that Asia has to offer, as well as experience the world-renowned hospitality of the Filipino people,” she added.

 

Asian Food Bonanza

Culminating this year’s edition is the exhibit of ‘Asian Food Champions’ featuring international country pavilions such as China, Taiwan, Korea, Vietnam, Thailand, Malaysia and other Asian countries. It shall be complemented by the ‘Asian Flavors Avenue’ where a variety of Asian cuisine will be offered to event participants, buyers and visitors.

“With the show’s strong reputation and our aggressive marketing campaign, we hope to get the support of Asian embassies, tourism promotion organizations (TPOs), marketing agents and well-known Asian restaurants to sign up for the event,” said Suaco-Juan.

Welcoming buyers and visitors with an appetizing zing will be the corner for fermented Asian food with a palatable selection of iconic pickles, relishes, condiments and tangy selection. It will feature the sweet, sour, salty and fermented preserves from various Asian countries.

“The flexibility of Asian food will also be put to the test in an Asian noodle exhibit which will highlight the range of traditional to ready-to-eat noodle products in their various forms, shapes, colors and flavors,” added Suaco-Juan.

A new much-awaited exhibit is the ‘IFEX Degustacion: Islands on a Plate’ that will host a unique food tasting experience and retail section in a ‘fiesta’ setting featuring home-grown food brands and best-known delicacies originating from various regions in the Philippines with a unique culinary heritage. Along this setting is a beverage lane that will give buyers and visitors a preview of the latest in fruit- and vegetable-based alcoholic and non-alcoholic beverages, juices, wines and spirits where Filipino home-grown beverages and top local brands will be featured.

“We’re also very excited to debut ‘The Cold Room,’ an innovative exhibit designed to feature various Philippine seafood like tuna, prawns, octopus, seaweed and other high-value marine food products in an actual cold storage facility open to the guests,” Suaco-Juan said as she described how buyers and visitors will have the chance to taste and sample fresh sashimi, ceviche and shrimp cocktails.

 

Global PH food firms step up

Another exciting addition is the ‘Food Philippines’ hall which shall be the premier venue for top Philippine food brands with a strong presence in the global food market. It shall house the country’s exporters of Premium 7 products and the next rising stars in Philippine food, as well as consolidators representing Philippine food exporters.

“The country’s Premium 7 export products are banana, mango, pineapple, coconut, tuna, coffee and cacao. These commodities are tagged as the Premium 7 since these have been the Philippines’ leading food export for the longest time,” said Suaco-Juan.

Meanwhile, the next rising stars of Philippine food include calamansi (Philippine lime), pili nuts, ube (purple yam), and fruit and vegetable-based beverages.

According to Suaco-Juan, these exhibits are only teasers of what is to come in IFEX Philippines 2019. Buyers and exhibitors can expect this year to be more oriented towards oriental flavors as the show strengthens its position as a premier sourcing event for Asian food and ingredients.

In 2017, IFEX Philippines was one of the official business events during the country’s hosting of the 31st Association of Southeast Asian Nation (ASEAN) Summit. The show paved the way for more opportunities and innovations around the world with the showcase of the Philippines’ best and overseas participation of Asian countries like China, South Korea, Brunei, Cambodia, Indonesia, Malaysia, Myanmar, Singapore and Thailand.

Last year, the three-day event was relaunched as an annual trade show. It showcased Asian food products from nearly 600 food exhibitors and welcomed more than 7,000 visitors including over 1,800 trade buyers from 40 countries around the world.

DTI-CITEM steps up ‘Premium 7’ export drive in Anuga 2017

premium-7Coconut, banana, pineapple and mango are among the country’s ‘Premium 7’ export food commodities that wil be featured in Anuga 2017 on October 7-11 at the Koelnmesse in Cologne, Germany.

The Philippines’ finest tropical fruits and marine products will take center stage in the much-awaited Anuga, the world’s largest food fair, to be held on October 7-11 at the Koelnmesse in Cologne, Germany.

Led by the Center for International Trade Expositions and Missions, the FoodPHILIPINES pavilion in Anuga will spotlight the country’s ‘Premium 7’ food export commodities, which includes coconut, pineapple, mango, banana, coffee, cacao and tuna—all in different varieties, cultivars, and packaging presentation.

“Buyers are welcomed to visit the FoodPHILIPPINES pavilion in Anuga and sample the Philippines’ finest export food and ingredients,” said CITEM Executive Director Clayton Tugonon. “Chosen for their market versatility, global demand and export performance, the ‘Premium 7’ food group strategically fulfills the ever-growing demand for distinct tropical products in the European market.”

Located in the Koelnmesse Hall 1 (D-042g to E-049g), the FoodPHILIPPINES pavilion will also offer free tasting of tropical fruit beverages, cakes and confectioneries, noodles, salmon, polvoron (powdered milk candy), sardines, bagoong (shrimp paste), and other condiments.

Based on a Eurostat data, countries in the European Union (EU) has imported €19.1 billion worth of fruit and vegetables in 2015. Fruit imports dominated the vegetables, accounting for 88.4 % of the total volume. Among the highly sought-after fruits were banana, mango, and pineapple.

High fruit import demand in EU is largely due to the widespread whole foods diet and growing health consciousness in the region. A 2014 data from the European Health Interview Survey (EHIS) shows that 51.4 percent or more than half the population in EU eats one to four portions of fruit and vegetables daily, while 14.1 % consumes more than five portions per day.

In the United Kingdom, one-third (33.1%) of the population consumed more than five daily portions, in Denmark it was 25.9%, and in the Netherlands 25%.

Fresh tuna is also a high-valued product in the European market. Netherlands-basedtuna Centre for the Promotion of Imports (CBI) said EU countries recorded a five percent annual increase in fresh tuna imports from 2011 to 2015.

In 2015, European countries imported a total of € 142 million of fresh tuna. Yellowfin tuna was imported the most (€ 59 million), followed by Albacore (€ 34 million).

 

19 PH firms exhibit in largest food fair

Among the 19 local companies that are part of the Philippines’ delegation, four firms that will debut in Anuga are Green Enviro Management Systems with their Philippine-patented mango flour products, gluten-free pasta, and pastries; Goldilocks Bakeshop Inc. with the homegrown polvoron (powdered milk candy), Republic Biscuit Corporation with their branded biscuits, candies, snacks, cakes, wafers, chocolates, nuts, ice cream, and Seabest Food and Beverage Corporation with their dried fruits, juices, and purees.

Meanwhile, making a comeback in the five-day event are Alliance Select Foods International Inc., Amley Food Corporation, B-G Fruits & Nuts Mfg. Corp., Brandexports Philippines Inc., Century Pacific Food, Inc., KLT Fruits, Inc., Mega Global Corporation, Phil. Grocers Food Exports Inc., Pixcel Transglobal Foods, Inc., Prime Fruits International Inc., Profood International Corporation, Q-Phil Products International, Sagrex Foods Inc., Seatrade Canning Corporation, and See’s International Food Mfg. Corp.

Held every two years, Anuga presents a combination of 10 specialized trade shows under one roof, showcasing the diverse product selection in the global food industry. This year, around 160,000 visitors are expected to join the five-day event to check out the latest and most innovative products from around 7,200 exhibitors across the globe.

CITEM primes PH exporters for EU market

“With Anuga as a promising platform, penetrating the European market is equally challenging as it is rewarding for our local companies with all the strict requirements and standard compliance that needs to be met,” Tugonon stressed. “That is why we are moving to upgrade the knowledge-based of our local companies on the current market trends and innovative product packaging that is geared for the European market.”

Last month, CITEM initiated a seminar on “EU Labeling Requirements based on Regulation No 1169/2011 of the European Parliament and of the Council,” in coordination with the Philippine Trade Training Center (PTTC).

The seminar was attended by the 18 participants from 8 companies (See’s International Food Manufacturing Corp., KLT Fruits Inc., Kitchen Witchery Food Ventures Inc., Mega Fishing Corporation, Goldilocks, B-G Fruits and Nuts Manufacturing Corp., Magic Melt Foods Inc., and Brand Exports Philippines Inc.) who will participate in ANUGA FOOD FAIR 2017 with the theme “Taste the Future.”

During the seminar, Engr. Menandro Ortego of PTTC discussed the detailed labeling requirements for the EU market and DTI-Bureau of International Trade Relations (BITR) Director Ann Claire Cabochan emphasized the benefits under the EU’s Generalised Scheme of Preferences (GSP+), and oriented the exhibitors on the website of the EU Export Help Desk for the tariff code of their respective products.

 

 

 

 

42 PH firms eye export deals in China

Food, home and fashion exporters join PHL delegation at CAEXPO

Forty-two (42) exporters will join the Philippines’ delegation in the upcoming 14th China-ASEAN Expo (CAEXPO) on September 12-15, as part of strengthened promotional efforts to create more trade and investment opportunities in the Chinese market.

The Philippines delegation at CAEXPO will be led by the Department of Trade and Industry-Center for International Trade Expositions and Missions (DTI-CITEM), in partnership with the Provincial Government of Aurora, Export Marketing Bureau (DTI-EMB), Board of Investments (BOI), the Department of Agriculture – Agribusiness and Marketing Assistance Service (DA-AMAS), Tourism Promotions Board (TPB), and the technical working group (TWG) of the Philippine Investment Promotion Plan (PIPP).

“We have handpicked over 40 export-competitive companies from the food and lifestyle sectors across the Philippines,” said DTI-CITEM Executive Director Clayton Tugonon. “They are all eager to corner the overwhelming demand for healthy food, marine produce, fresh fruits, and culinary ingredients in one of the world’s largest economies.”

Based on the Philippine Statistics Authority (PSA), China ranked as the country’s fourth top export destination, with merchandise deliveries in 2016 ending nearly flat at $6.19 billion from $6.17 billion in 2016.

Among the Philippines food exports that will be exhibited in China are Cavendish banana and banana chips; coconut preserves and by-products; durian; cacao; coffee; sugar; pili nuts; milkfish, sardines, and tuna; and other food supplements. Meanwhile, home and fashion products featured are shoes, bags, pearls, home decors and other handwoven products.

Meanwhile, joining home and fashion brands are Ai-She Footwear, Art’s Craft Enterprises, Easter Weaving Room, Inc., Jacildo’s Handicraft, Jer Shell’s Craft Creation Int’l, Jhaz Footwear Store, John Carlo Creations, Maddela Flowers and Crafts, Mindanao Pearl Center, Northway Arts and Crafts, and Tribal Handicraft Makers Association.

CAEXPO is the second biggest trade event in China, with a total exhibition space of about 80,000 sqm. and 4,600 exhibition booths with around 57,000 participants. It is the only international trade fair in the region dedicated to promoting the building of China-ASEAN Free Trade Area (CAFTA) and celebrating regional economic and trade cooperation.

For this year’s participation, DTI-CITEM targets to help the local MSMEs penetrate the Chinese and Southeast Asian markets, and secure at least $8 million export sales.

DTI-CITEM brings coconut, banana, and tuna products to SIAL Paris

FoodPhilippines, through the Center for International Trade Expositions and Missions (CITEM), steps up its campaign in European countries, especially as the Philippines looks to maximize trade opportunities under the EU-GSP+ (Generalized System of Preferences Plus). The FoodPhilippines presentation will highlight coconut, banana, and tuna products in its participation to SIAL Paris on 16-20 October 2016 at the Paris Nord Villepente.

Citing a press report from the Department of Trade and Industry (DTI) in 2015 that EU-GSP+ increased Philippine exports increased by 27 percent, CITEM Executive Director Rosvi C. Gaetos shares that coconut oil, canned tuna, and preserved fruits are included in the major export products under the zero tariff scheme.

“We are going to take advantage of this momentum in the Philippine export industry by highlighting top quality products like coconut, banana, and tuna through the participation of 15 companies in SIAL Paris, the largest food innovation  exhibition,” Gaetos states. “Tuna especially poses higher export potential because the world is starting to recognize that one of the best tunas in the world comes from the Philippines.”

According to government data on Philippine agricultural exports in 2012, coconut, banana, and tuna are constantly included among the top six export commodities from 2004-2010, with the Netherlands as one of the country’s biggest export markets. CITEM expects that these three food export commodities will benefit greatly from the zero tariff as the rate will go down from 20 percent for tuna, and 10 percent for coconut.

The Philippines is a major exporter of coconut products, particularly coconut oil. The country exports over 70 percent of its coconut oil, with Europe having 52 percent and United States receiving 33.9 percent of the trade, according to the United Coconut Associations of the Philippines (UCAP).

UCAP notes that coconuts are gaining popularity in the UK retail market, with coconut oil now worth over Lsd 14 million per year in sales, and coconut water worth almost Lsd 60 million in value sales, as reported by IRI’s InfoScan data. The same market analysis data also reported that the coconut trend is playing out in other European countries as well, with its increased popularity attributed to Thai-inspired food, and the its health benefits.

Banana is also one of the country’s major fruit exports, comprising 86.9 percent of the total volume in metric tons of fruit exports from the Philippines in 2013. It constitutes a substantial portion of the country’s export revenues. The Cavendish variety, in particular, topped the export statistics for fresh fruits as it surpassed the USD 1B mark in 2014, posting a growth of 18.06 percent from USD 962.58M in 2013 to USD 1.136M last year. Processed banana products are also gaining strong foothold in both local and international markets.

The Philippines ranked 7th among top fish-producing countries in the world in 2013, comprising 2.46 percent of the total world production of 191 million MT. In 2014, tuna, along with seaweeds and shrimp/prawn, accounted for 65 percent of the total export value worth USD 1, 274 million. Tuna is still the country’s top fish export commodity,  with export value at USD 443 million. Canned tuna in particular constituted the bulk of export tuna products.

Coconut, banana and tuna are part of the Premium 7 food group that is considered as the Philippines’ key export drivers in the food industry given that these products considered to be among the best in the global market or manifest high export potential. Also included in the Premium 7 are pineapple, cacao, coffee, and mango.
